Mobile clinical assistant launched at HC2007
The first product based on a new category of computing device, the
mobile clinical assistant (MCA), successfully piloted at Salford Royal
NHS Foundation Trust and other hospitals throughout the world, was
launched at HC2007
last month (March).
Lightweight, spill-resistant, drop-tolerant and easily disinfected,
Motion Computing’s C5 enables clinicians to access up-to-the-minute
patient records and to document a patient’s condition instantly,
enhancing clinical workflow and reducing administrative workload.
The device incorporates wireless connectivity for access to
up-to-date secure patient information (and clinicians’ notes);
radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology for rapid user logon; a
digital camera to enhance patient charting; and blue-tooth technology to
help capture patient vital signs.
“The MCA gave me on the spot access to patient details at the
bedside”, says staff nurse Jenny Quilliam, who took part in the Salford
pilot. “I was able to look up results, check and make referrals as part
of the ward round and support case conferences.”
The Salford trial was the first European pilot of an MCA. C5 was
jointly developed by Motion Computing and software developer Intel.
