Labelling system for Informing Healthcare

As part of its drive towards increased IT systems integration and better data quality, Welsh Assembly Government agency Informing Healthcare has signed a framework agreement for the provision of LabelTrace, a patient demographic labelling system developed by QuickTrace Ltd, to all general practices across Wales.

The system will initially be used to replace handwriting on request forms and specimen tubes with labels containing clearly printed and barcoded patient demographic information, supplied directly from the clinical system.

Results from two pilot trials carried out last year suggest that LabelTrace will offer significant time savings to both practices and laboratories when handling specimen requests. The quality of data, moreover, has been dramatically improved resulting in fewer instances of creation of duplicate patient records at the laboratories.

LabelTrace was chosen because it was the only labelling solution that could print an identical label, irrespective of which of 12 clinical systems it came from. It also offered a proven solution that was already in use in almost every practice in Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as a number of practices in England.

Graham Fenton of Codegate, the suppliers of LabelTrace for England and Wales, said the adoption of LabelTrace would help facilitate agreement on a standard label design for use throughout Wales. “This will offer long-lasting improvements in data quality and in the speed and efficiency of processing sample requests across 500 practices and 12 pathology departments, spread across 22 local health boards”, he said.

Codegate is headquartered in Oxfordshire, and QuickTrace in Edinburgh.
