Virtual guided ultrasound minimises need for surgery

The latest scanning facilities on the new Acuson Antares ultrasound system are benefiting patients under the Breast Screening Unit of North Middlesex University Hospital in London. The Antares depth range enables radiologists to core minute lesions deep within large breasts, something that was previously impossible.

Confirming the Antares’ advantages to the hospital, consultant radiologist Dr Tom Matzindwa explained: “This model allows us to establish more precise diagnoses, and in cases where breast carcinoma has been confirmed, the Antares can be used in the staging process by offering reliable imaging results on the liver. Using ultrasound-guided biopsy we are able to obtain highly accurate sampling results on very small lesions, with invariably no need to revert to more expensive and time-consuming methods.

“Additional advantages to us include the image storage facilities where patients’ results can be played back and reviewed later at leisure, sorted or downloaded for teaching purposes.”
