Improved communications for ambulance services

The Department of Health (DoH) has awarded a contract for a new digital radio communication system for all NHS ambulance trusts in England.

The communication system, known as O2 Airwave, is already in use by 51 police forces in the UK. Designed to carry voice and data communications and with guaranteed levels of coverage across England, Wales and Scotland, it is a secure digital radio network for the exclusive use of the UK’s emergency and public safety services.
A key feature of the service is that users can maintain contact even in remote areas or from confined spaces, such as within buildings and tunnels, where radio coverage is usually unreliable.

Ambulance Trusts will start taking delivery of the systems from the middle of 2006, and roll-out will be complete by the end of 2008. The O2 Airwave contract is worth £390m.
